SLFA parts ways with Leone Stars Coach Mohamed Kallon

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has announced the immediate termination of Mohamed Kallon as head coach of the national men’s team, the Leone Stars.

Kallon, a former national team star and one of Sierra Leone’s most celebrated footballers, was appointed in February 2025 with a mandate to revitalize the Leone Stars, improve international competitiveness, and lay the groundwork for qualification to major tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. At the time of his appointment, the national team was struggling in both competitive results and FIFA rankings, reflecting broader structural challenges in Sierra Leonean football.

The SLFA said the decision to part ways with Kallon follows a comprehensive review of the team’s technical, administrative, and strategic direction. Officials described the leadership change as necessary to align with the long-term goals of the association and the development of the national team.

“All administrative measures relating to this transition will be implemented immediately,” the SLFA said, while acknowledging Kallon’s service and contributions during his tenure. The association extended best wishes for his future professional endeavors.

During his tenure, Kallon oversaw seven matches, registering three wins, two draws, and two losses. Notable results include a victory over Guinea‑Bissau in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, balanced by defeats against higher-ranked teams such as Egypt. Football observers noted tactical improvements and a modest rise in FIFA rankings, with Sierra Leone moving from 120th to 119th out of 211 nations following recent friendlies in Azerbaijan.

The incremental rise in ranking is expected to boost team morale and provide momentum ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, even as the SLFA prepares to appoint a new head coach.
