One hundred young Sierra Leoneans are to receive training as electric vehicle (EV) drivers under an initiative aimed at promoting cleaner transport and creating employment opportunities.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and the Armed Forces Technical and Education College (AFTEC), has launched an orientation programme ahead of the drivers’ training.

The initiative, known as Sierra Ride, will begin with a fleet of 50 electric vehicles operating in Freetown.

It seeks to promote cleaner urban transport while equipping young people with practical skills to access employment opportunities in the emerging electric mobility sector.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Youth Affairs, Director James Sandy described the initiative as more than a transport project, saying it could help young people earn sustainable incomes, achieve financial independence and participate in the growing green economy.

The programme also involves cooperation between civilian institutions and the military. AFTEC will use the technical expertise and training facilities of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces to prepare participants for employment in the sector.

RSLAF Training Commander Issa Bangura said the two-week training would cover electric vehicle operations, road safety, basic maintenance and responsible vehicle management.

Participants will also receive instruction in financial literacy and income management to help them manage their earnings and build sustainable livelihoods.

The initiative comes as Sierra Leone explores cleaner transport alternatives and seeks to expand employment opportunities for young people.

UNDP says the programme is part of efforts to support green technology, develop technical skills and promote more sustainable transportation.
