President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has positioned himself at the centre of Sierra Leone’s ongoing political reconciliation process as international moral guarantors reviewed progress on the Agreement for National Unity between his government and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC).
The high-level delegation met President Bio at State House to assess implementation of agreed reforms and encourage sustained dialogue between the two main political actors under the Tripartite Committee framework.
Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh informed the President that recent engagements with both the guarantors and the APC had remained constructive, with government maintaining a steady commitment to dialogue and implementation.
Board Chairman of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, Rev. Shodankeh Johnson, said the visit was part of ongoing monitoring of commitments made under the unity agreement, with emphasis on maintaining political stability and trust between parties.
Former Gambian Vice President and lead guarantor, Mrs Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, praised President Bio’s leadership, describing him as central to sustaining the dialogue process and commending his broader role in regional peace efforts.
At the heart of the engagement, President Bio reaffirmed his commitment to peace, national cohesion, and democratic reform, stressing that his administration continues to prioritise stability over partisan considerations.
He defended key reforms initiated under his leadership, including proposed electoral adjustments such as proportional representation, which he said are designed to improve fairness, inclusion, and credibility in the political system.
The President also pointed to major governance reforms already undertaken, including the abolition of the death penalty and the repeal of seditious libel laws, describing them as evidence of his government’s commitment to civil liberties and democratic consolidation.
Calling for unity beyond political divides, President Bio urged Sierra Leoneans to carry the country’s tradition of religious tolerance into its political culture, reiterating his vision of transforming Sierra Leone into a “stable oasis of peace.”
The engagement further reinforces President Bio’s central role in steering the post-election dialogue process, as international partners continue to back efforts aimed at consolidating peace and advancing institutional reforms in Sierra Leone.
