Sierra Leonean rapper Alhaji Amadu Bah, popularly known as LAJ, has been replaced as Peace Ambassador, following new appointments announced by State House on Thursday.
In a notice signed by Secretary to the President Barba B. Fortune and dated 30 April 2026, President Julius Maada Bio appointed Mr. Abubakarr S. Turay, popularly known as Shady Baby, as the country’s new Peace Ambassador.
A review of publicly available records shows that LAJ was originally appointed to the role on 12 February 2024, meaning he served for about two years and two months before the latest change.
While no official reason was provided for the decision, the replacement comes after a period of heightened public controversy surrounding the artist, including his recent legal troubles and public disputes involving Kenema City Mayor Thomas Baio. The timing is likely to fuel speculation that recent events may have influenced the decision, although authorities have not made any direct link.
LAJ’s appointment in 2024 drew national attention because of his popularity among young people and his influence in Sierra Leone’s entertainment industry. His replacement by fellow entertainer Shady Baby is expected to generate strong reactions across music and social media circles.
The Peace Ambassador role is generally viewed as a symbolic platform intended to promote peace, unity, and youth engagement.
The full appointments announced by State House are:
*Mr. Ahmed Saybom Kanu – Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources
*Mr. Mohamed Alphaka Conteh Esq. – Executive Director, National Sports Authority (NSA)
*Mr. Abubakarr S. Turay (Shady Baby) – Peace Ambassador
