Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security says a Chinese employee will be deported and permanently barred from returning to the country following allegations that he assaulted a local worker at a factory outside the capital.

The ministry said it launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from one Algassimu Barrie, an employee of KK Company in Mile Six, in the Western Area Rural District.

According to the ministry, the company management confirmed that the worker, identified as Lin Zhang, kicked Barrie after accusing him of stealing company drinks. It added that management also alleged that further injuries sustained by Barrie were inflicted by local security personnel.

Police are conducting a separate investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the ministry condemned workplace violence and said disciplinary measures must be carried out in line with Sierra Leonean law and internationally recognised labour standards.

It said the company had agreed to repatriate the employee immediately and imposed a permanent ban on his return in connection with its operations.

Authorities also said investigations into the role of security personnel were ongoing, and that anyone found responsible would face legal action.

The case comes as Sierra Leone continues to strengthen enforcement of labour and workplace safety regulations amid rising foreign investment in sectors such as mining, manufacturing and construction.

Officials have reiterated that all employers operating in the country are required to comply with national laws and ensure the safety and dignity of workers.
