Sierra Leone launches inquiry into alleged passport misuse, parliament raises alarm

The Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) has launched a thorough investigation following reports that a Turkish national, allegedly involved in criminal and drug-related activities, was found in possession of a Sierra Leone diplomatic passport. The case has attracted attention from media outlets in the Netherlands, Germany, and Sierra Leone.

The government has described the allegations as extremely serious, emphasizing that protecting the integrity of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic privileges and national reputation is a top priority.

By directive of President Julius Maada Bio, SLID is investigating:

•How the individual obtained the diplomatic passport

•The authenticity of any supporting documents

•Possible procedural failures or misconduct

In addition, SLID will audit all diplomatic passports to ensure accountability and prevent future misuse. The Immigration Department reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, transparency, and upholding Sierra Leone’s image, warning that any confirmed wrongdoing will attract swift disciplinary and legal action.

The investigation comes amid rising public concern over the integrity of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic and immigration systems. In Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Leader of the Opposition, condemned the situation as:

“A national disgrace that demands urgent action… never in our history have we witnessed such a shameful pattern of events that so recklessly tarnish our country’s image before the world.”

Kargbo highlighted multiple recent scandals, including:

•Bags of cocaine discovered in an official government vehicle belonging to Sierra Leone’s embassy in Guinea

•Reports of world-wanted drug lords in possession of Sierra Leonean passports, including a suspect extradited from the UAE to Turkey

“Our embassies, which are meant to represent the honour and integrity of Sierra Leone, are now being mentioned in the same breath as international drug trafficking,” Kargbo said. “The Sierra Leonean passport, once a symbol of national pride and identity, is now becoming a tool for criminal syndicates who exploit our weaknesses for their own gain.”

He further criticized the government for harboring international criminals despite repeated extradition requests, describing it as deliberate complicity and a calculated betrayal of the people.

“This is, without question, the worst disgrace any government can bring upon its people. It is a national crisis that demands transparency, accountability, and the immediate restoration of Sierra Leone’s integrity on the global stage,” Kargbo added.

Observers say the twin issues of passport misuse and drug-related scandals have severely damaged Sierra Leone’s international reputation, underscoring the need for swift government action, oversight reforms, and accountability measures.

SLID’s ongoing investigation and broader audit of diplomatic passports is seen as the first step toward rebuilding trust in the nation’s immigration and diplomatic systems.
