Seventeen Sierra Leonean nationals have been confirmed dead following a landslide at a landfill in Conakry, Guinea, according to an update from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The victims, identified through a joint exercise involving Guinean authorities and officials from the Sierra Leonean embassy, include 14 men and three women.
The landslide occurred at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in the Gbessia area of Conakry on 24 August, with the Guinean government reporting 34 deaths in total.
Recovery and identification efforts are continuing, while authorities are working to establish the identities of other victims and account for people who remain missing.
The Sierra Leonean embassy has also confirmed 54 Sierra Leonean survivors, comprising 32 women, 17 men and five minors.
The survivors have received immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, clothing and other essential supplies. Their further consular and humanitarian needs are being assessed.
The Sierra Leonean government has expressed condolences to the families of those who died and solidarity with the government and people of Guinea.
The embassy remains in contact with Guinean authorities and affected Sierra Leonean families as recovery and identification efforts continue.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the public to rely on officially verified information when sharing details about casualties and missing persons, warning that the situation remains sensitive and could change as identification efforts continue.
