By – Chernor Juldeh Bah, IEC Officer – WARDC

Chairman of the Western Area Rural District Council, Chairman Kasho J Holland Cole, has on Monday, August 26, 2024, turned sod for the construction of public toilets in Jui, Benguema and Bassa Town villages in the Western Area Rural District.

The project is expected to complete in a month time and will cost NLe 450,000.

It could be recalled that the Western Area Rural District is challenged with inadequate, or lack of public toilets. And it’s on this foundation that the Western Area Rural District Council, under the astute leadership of Chairman Kasho J. Holland Cole, is embarking on such venture.

The contractor of the said project, Dennis Bango, stated that the project will display the Council’s design, and it will be a four rooms’ standard building with enough water running through it.”

“It will be a fence toilet which will be separated from the septic.”

Councilor Zakariah Kanneh, Chairman of Works and Infrastructure Committee at the Western Area Rural District Council, said that their primary job at the district council is to play oversight role.

He disclosed that the money used for the said project is own source and it’s coming from the people through the taxes they pay.

He assured that they will be monitoring to make sure the actual design of the project is done. He entreated the people to continue to pay their taxes as that will attract more favors.

The village heads of Jui, Benguema and Bassa Town villages, commended the Council and its chairman for thinking about them with such development. Noting their happiness, they pointed out their long suffering for public toilets in their respective communities, and they are happy such development is coming to pass. They committed their support to achieving the project.

The Chairman of the Western Area Rural District Council, Chairman Kasho J. Holland Cole, indicated that he was happy to give back to his people.

“We have been taking developments in the district step by step. There have been challenges, but we are getting there. This project is funded with the money you pay as taxes. It’s yours that’s why you should own and protect it. There are over 100 villages in my district and development projects are awarded based on how you pay your taxes. Your selection is clearly an indication of how you have been contributing to taxation in the district,” he said, entreating them to continue to their taxes. He added that the project upon completion will be run by the villages and the Council, and the proceeds will go back to the villages.

Chairman Kasho Cole thanked Chief Administrator Festus Kallay for being assiduous in supporting developments in the district.

He however stated that the project is apolitical, and the youth will be considered in the recruitment of its labor.

He also admonished the youth to stay off kush as it shows disturbing effects on them.
