SL Premier League to start using VAR technology

By Ibrahim T Kayamba

The Leone Rock Premier League Board has agreed with premier league clubs in an emergency board meeting yesterday, on the 25th April, 2024, to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in their league for the rest of the season.

This, according to the Board, is to enhance effective, transparent and fair decisions making, and also to improve the standard of the Sierra Leone Premier League.

It could be recalled, before the second leg commencement of the Leone Rock Premier League, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) went into an agreement with the Africa Young Voices(AYV) Television channel to broadcast the Sierra Leone Premier League matches on their television channel 33 and on DSTV Channel 399 for a wider coverage on the league.

The AYV Television has secured quality Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology cost $29,000. This technology will be tested in the coming week of the Leone Rock Premier League fixtures for the first time in Sierra Leone.

However, “this technology will not be 100% effective has it is used in European leagues and in CAF sanctioned competitions, for a start,” Abdul Karim Kargbo, PLB head of Media, has said

Sierra Leone will now join Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Zambia to use VAR technology in their country’s professional football leagues in the continent.
