Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sengepoh Thomas, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the continued absence and late attendance of Members of Parliament (MPs) during official sittings. Addressing the Well of Parliament on Tuesday 29th April 2025, Hon. Thomas described the situation as “unacceptable” and a clear sign of declining commitment among some elected representatives.
The Speaker lamented the growing trend of MPs failing to show up for sessions, warning that it undermines the integrity and effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings.
“This House cannot continue to operate with such blatant disregard for attendance and punctuality,” he stated firmly.
In response to the ongoing issue, Hon. Thomas announced plans to convene a special meeting next week. The purpose of the meeting, he said, will be to allow all MPs to deliberate and agree on concrete punitive measures against members who continuously fail to fulfill their responsibilities.
“This is not a matter to be taken lightly. We owe it to the people we represent to show up, be present, and participate actively in the legislative process,” he said.
While no specific penalties were disclosed during his address, the Speaker hinted that all options were on the table, stating that there could be consequences that will affect non-compliant MPs.
