Sierra Leone: LUC intensifies raids on Kush smokers, arrests ten suspects

By Richmond B Tholley

The Local Unit Commander of the Mile 91 Division, Chief Superintendent of Police Michael JK Lagga, has on the 20th November, 2023, intimated this medium that ten suspects are in their custody and will soon be charged to court for various drug (Kush) related offenses.

Since Kush was declared a national security, CSP Lagga said, he has been mapping out strategies that will help stop the smoking and selling of the said drug in his operational vicinities including intensive raids on ghettoes and places known and identified by communities, organizing sensitization tours to secondary schools, engaging in radio talk shows among others.

Successfully, the Local Unit Commander said it was during one of the raids by his operation team that ten people were arrested around the Mile 91 township and its environs.

Among those arrested, he stated, there were those found smoking and selling the Kush.

The others, he noted, were arrested for frequenting in places known for smoking.

Since he took over as the Head and Commander of the Mile 91 Division, the seasoned police officer said, though faced with challenges, he has together with his team in all departments succeeded in reducing crimes and prosecuting criminals that may want to disturb the peace of Mile 91 residents and its neighborhoods.

“Our role is to make sure that citizens go about their businesses peacefully. We only go after those who may want to disturb the peace of others or go against the laws of the State,” CSP Lagga said.

The LUC said he is going to make sure the Mile 91 township is Kush free and those standing against that move, will face the wrath of the law.

Lagga added that Kush is a threat to the growth of youths and must be fought against at all cost.

“What am doing is complementing the effort of the Government to stop this menace in society,” said LUC Lagga.

All of those in custody, CSP Lagga said, are going to appear soon before the Tonkolili District resident Magistrate in Magburaka.

“I have ordered the Crime Officer to prepare all files related to those Kush suspects and we will soon send them to Magburaka to stand before the Magistrate,” CSP Lagga maintained.

Mile 91, a town in Yoni Mamaila Chiefdom, in the Northern District of Tonkolili is among the communities whose youthful population has been ravaged by the Kush drug.

Recently, residents have been worried about the growing increase in the taking of substances by the majority of the youths and its consequences on them.

Many of the community’s industrious young people have lost their human dignity and engaged in crimes since they started taking the Kush.

It was against this backdrop that the majority of the residents here are in support of the moves taken by CSP Lagga and his team. This is the first time citizens in Mile 91 widely commended the police.

“My brother, the entire community is in support of the police in Mile 91. We’re in support of the LUC because this Kush is posing a threat to our community and has destroyed our youths. A lot of them have turned out to be thieves, beggars, and useless people in society immediately they started taking this drug [Kush],” Abdul Kargbo, a businessman at the Mile 91 main junction stated.
