Liberals Sierra Leone celebrates 26th Anniversary of Liberals Ideology

By Morris Ibrahim Kanteh

Officially launched on June 8, 1998, the Liberals ideology was carefully and intentionally founded and nursed on the sacred soils of Mount Aureole, Fourah Bay College during the early 1990’s by like-minded students, to challenge dictatorship and replace a student governance system that favors the interest of the minority; with a progressive and forward thinking political and governance system that prioritizes the interest of the general good. The membership ensure that they imbibe their core values of pluralism, diversity, integrity, transparency and accountability and stay guided by these values in the delivery of their responsibility whether in the public or private sector. Throughout this period, members of the Liberals brotherhood, both at Fourah Bay College and globally, with firm courage and strength, continue to champion the liberation of society for political, economic and social emancipation for the general good- while brightly shinning their lights to provide direction for the benefit of others and society. At Fourah Bay College, particularly, the Liberals political entity has dominated student governance at different periods, demonstrating responsible, competent, and excellent leadership.

The Liberals Foundation Sierra Leone Chapter, and the Liberals Foundation Diaspora Chapter (also operating in the United States of America) were both legally established a few years ago as non-profit organizations, where past members of the Liberals Brotherhood can converge, organize and continue to make charitable, strategic and meaningful interventions on issues of significant national and humanitarian interest for the general good of all.

To commemorate the 26th registration Anniversary of the Liberals Brotherhood, the Liberals Foundation Sierra Leone Chapter organized a Health Walk on Saturday June 8, 2024. The health walk was organized as a public education effort to raise awareness, especially among young people, on the dangers of the escalating menace of drug addiction which currently threatens the well being of the entire society. The health walk which was themed: AWARENESS ON DRUG AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE, started with a procession from Congo Cross Roundabout to Aberdeen Beach, and attracted hundreds of participants, mainly members of the Brotherhood and other prominent associates. The event ended up with contributions and statements from prominent members and associates – all advocating for a collaborative effort to end the drug menace, especially by attacking the importation and supply chain, in an urgent bid to save the future of the next generation and protect the government’s human capital development efforts. The acting Head of Liberals Foundation- Ing. Ishmail Bundu stated that they intend to follow up on this action to help provide a lasting solution to the drug crisis.

However, this is not the first time the Liberals Foundation is making such an important intervention to help provide solutions to national emergencies. For example, in 2015, the Foundation donated drugs, medical items and food worth over 250 million old Leones to the health sector to support the fight against Ebola. There are many other instances of such significant interventions by the Liberals Foundation. With membership comprising prominent individuals from every respected profession both nationally and internationally who are trailblazers and positive change agents, the Liberals Foundation as a political entity will continue to pursue and set a bright example of excellent leadership and continue to advocate and promote an inclusive governance and political model that champions the welfare of the general good for positive and lasting political, social, and economic liberation of Sierra Leone and humanity.
