The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey has assured the public that results for the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will be released by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) by the end of September, 2023.
Minister Sackey made the disclosure on Tuesday 12th September, 2023, during a government press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Freetown.
“I have engaged WAEC regarding the release of the WASSCE and BECE results, for WASSCE, I was told it will be released by the end of this week or mid-next week. For BECE, we anticipate it by the end of this month,” the minister said.
Minister Sackey underscored the fact that timely release of public examination results has been a mantra for the MBSSE since they started the implementation of the Free and Quality School Examination (FQSE), noting that when results are released earlier, it reduces the period the children stay at home and this prevents them from moving into harm’s way.
Wednesday 2nd August, 2023, saw the completion of the BECE, which was the last public examination conducted this year.
The 2023 BECE that started on Monday 24th July, 2023, saw a total of 130,857 candidates registering for the examination with 67,107 (51.28%) girls and 63,750 (48.72%) boys.
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) comes at the end of formal basic education in Sierra Leone. It is administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The WASSCE was taken in May and June this year.
