The Government of Sierra Leone has publicly addressed allegations circulating in the media regarding Jos Leijdekkers, described as a convicted drug felon and one of Europe’s most wanted individuals. Reports claim that Leijdekkers was present in Sierra Leone and allegedly appeared in photographs taken during events attended by President Julius Maada Bio and his family. These allegations have sparked widespread public and international interest, questioning the country’s role in combating transnational crime.
In a statement issued on January 26, 2025, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education clarified the government’s position, denying any prior knowledge of the allegations and reiterating its commitment to addressing the issue transparently.
The government firmly stated that President Bio, during the festive season, attended numerous public and family gatherings where photos were taken with a variety of individuals. The statement emphasizes that the President was unaware of the identity of Jos Leijdekkers or any details surrounding his criminal activities.
