The Institute of Governance Reform- IGR, has in a statement issued yesterday, Tuesday, July 4th, 2023, disclosed that non of the political parties that contested the June 24th, 2023, parliamentary elections achieved “the two-thirds constitutional majority of the Sierra Leone Parliament.”
“This means, SLPP with its 54.4%majority will have to constantly cooperate and negotiate with the opposition APC (36.2%) and Paramount Chiefs (9.4%) on all legislative scrutiny and approvals in the next five years.”
The statement furthers that women’s representation in the coming 6th Parliament has increased by “15% percentage points in 2023 with Kailahun (40%) and Bonthe(40%) recording the highest.”
It also states “30.4%(41 MPs) of the 135 directly elected MPs are women.”
“Because only 1 of 14 Paramount Chief MPs is a woman, total female MPs came down to 28%.”
