Some might argue that developing football through schools is a low priority for our country, where formal education is highly valued. However, in an interview with Babadi Kamara, the favourite for SLFA President in 2025, he expressed his commitment to prioritizing the growth of youth football, starting from schools. “I believe in working with the Ministry of Education and Sports to bring back inter-school competitions, ranging from primary, secondary, and university levels, through chiefdom, district, and regional stages, as a way of tapping into young talent for the future growth of the country’s football,” Babadi said.
He also stressed the importance of training coaches who can supervise the game, teach the theories of the sport, and develop talent. “We constantly complain about the lack of proper youth structures, which is one of the main reasons football has failed to develop in Sierra Leone. Some people have tried to set up academies or hold tournaments to tap young talent, but the results have not been forthcoming,” he noted.
During the interview, Babadi further revealed his intention to bring in more certified and advanced referee courses to enhance the refereeing department and ensure that referees can perform their duties in a fair, free, and conducive environment. He emphasized the need for structures that will allow the game to thrive and be played in all corners of the country.
He also made a special reference to the media, urging them to perform their duties without fear or intimidation. As the head of the football association, he promised to provide advanced courses for football administrators and journalists to enhance their skills and improve the overall running of football in the country.
