APC Executive lacks mandate to conduct lower level elections – Alimamy Kamara

Former All People’s Congress (APC) Member of Parliament for Bombali District, Hon. Alimamy Kamara, has questioned the authority of the party’s current national executive to conduct the forthcoming lower level elections.

Hon. Kamara, a former Minister of Youth Affairs, said the mandate of the existing APC executive expires in February, arguing that any electoral process conducted beyond that period would lack constitutional legitimacy.

Speaking on the issue, the former Ambassador to Iran called for the immediate dissolution of the current executive and the establishment of an interim body to oversee the organization of the lower level elections. He said the process should culminate in the convening of the party’s National Delegates’ Conference, at which a new standard bearer would be elected.

According to Hon. Kamara, the creation of an interim structure would help restore internal democracy and ensure that the party’s electoral processes are conducted in strict compliance with the APC constitution.

The APC national executive has, however, rejected these claims, maintaining that it retains the mandate and authority to proceed with the lower level elections as planned.

The All People’s Congress has experienced persistent internal divisions since losing power to the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in the 2018 general elections. As the party seeks to rebuild and reposition itself in opposition, disputes over leadership legitimacy and constitutional interpretation have repeatedly surfaced.

Lower level elections covering ward, constituency, district, and regional party structures are widely regarded as a critical step toward the National Delegates’ Conference. The conference is responsible for electing the party’s national leadership and selecting its presidential flag bearer, making the process central to the APC’s preparations for the 2028 general elections.

Political observers note that control of the lower level elections is likely to shape delegate composition and influence future leadership contests within the party. With the 2028 elections drawing closer, the outcome of the current mandate dispute is expected to have significant implications for the APC’s unity, internal cohesion, and overall electoral readiness.
