Africell Sierra Leone has completed the colocation of seven broadcast sites across the country to power Rural Farmers Radio, the nation’s first dedicated radio network focused exclusively on farmers. This milestone marks a bold step toward advancing agricultural development and aligns closely with the government’s flagship Feed Salone Initiative.
During the official launch ceremony, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Henry Kpaka, expressed deep appreciation to Africell for making the initiative a reality. He hailed the network as “a great milestone in Sierra Leone’s efforts towards achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security.”
Africell CEO Shadi Gerjawi reaffirmed the company’s commitment to empowering communities through access to technology and communication. “We’re proud to support a project that delivers essential information on sustainable farming practices to rural farmers, directly contributing to the Feed Salone agenda,” he stated.
Gerjawi also highlighted Africell’s broader contribution to media infrastructure, revealing that the company has powered more than 47 radio stations across the country for over 11 years with continuous electricity supply—a testament to its long-term investment in information access and rural development.
He emphasized radio’s enduring relevance in Sierra Leone, calling it “one of the most powerful tools for education, community development, and peacebuilding.” He added, “This initiative reflects the unique relationship radio has with our communities and its capacity to educate, inform, and promote peace for national development.”
The Rural Farmers Radio Network represents a groundbreaking collaboration between the private sector and government. It aims to deliver timely, reliable, and relevant agricultural content to farmers nationwide—enhancing productivity, improving livelihoods, and strengthening the rural economy.
