Africell Sierra Leone has officially launched its own league for subscribers on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), giving football fans an exciting opportunity to test their managerial skills and compete for attractive prizes.
The launch event took place on Thursday, 31st July 2025, at Africell’s headquarters on Pivot Street, Wilberforce, in Freetown.
Speaking at the ceremony, Africell Media Relations Team Lead, Abdul Aziz Kamara, explained the fundamentals of the Fantasy Premier League. He described it as a free online game based on the English Premier League that allows fans to act as virtual football managers. Participants select a 15-player squad made up of real-life Premier League stars — including two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, and three forwards — all within a starting electronic budget of £100 million.
Managers are required to set a valid formation each week, choose a captain whose score is doubled, and a vice-captain who takes over if the captain does not play. Points are awarded based on actual player performances in Premier League matches — such as goals, assists, clean sheets, and saves — and deducted for actions like yellow cards, own goals, or missed penalties.
Each gameweek allows one free player transfer, with additional transfers costing four points. Player values may fluctuate depending on demand, and managers can deploy special “chips” such as the Wildcard, Triple Captain, Bench Boost, and Free Hit for tactical advantage.
Africell Marketing Communications Manager, Kamanda Koroma, expressed his excitement for the initiative, noting that he has been a fantasy football enthusiast for almost a decade. He said the Africell FPL is designed for both passionate football followers and those who simply enjoy competitive games.
“This is not like console games such as FIFA; it is an inclusive, real-time, football-based competition open to everyone without restrictions,” Koroma said. “It’s free to join, and the prizes are rewarding and transparent.”
The Africell FPL will run for the entire 2025/26 Premier League season — 38 gameweeks over ten months — and will feature weekly, monthly, and end-of-season prizes. Weekly winners will receive a Yamix bundle including SMS top-ups, data, and a one-month free subscription to Startimes, which broadcasts Premier League matches and other entertainment. Monthly winners will receive Le3,500 and a customized jersey of their favorite Premier League team.
At the end of the season, the top five overall performers will be rewarded:
- Champion: Le100,000
- Second Place: Le70,000
- Third Place: Le60,000
- Fourth Place: Le45,000
- Fifth Place: Le35,000
Participation is free, but entrants must have an Africell SIM registered in their name and an Afrimoney account to receive cash prizes.
Koroma added that Africell will keep players engaged through visual content, WhatsApp groups, podcasts, and regular social media updates. He stressed that transparency, credibility, and fairness will remain at the heart of the competition.
“This is part of our broader commitment to sports in Sierra Leone, from football to volleyball and basketball. We encourage everyone to join in, have fun, and be part of the Africell family,” Koroma concluded.
