Africell launches 3rd edition of Freetown Marathon

Africell Sierra Leone, the country’s leading telecommunications provider, has officially launched the 3rd edition of the Freetown Marathon. The announcement was made during a vibrant ceremony held on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the company’s headquarters on Pivot Street, Wilberforce, Freetown.

Set to take place on Sunday, December 8, 2024, the marathon aims to promote health, fitness, and community engagement while showcasing the beauty of Sierra Leone. Participants from across the nation are expected to join this year’s event, which will feature four race categories.

The Freetown Marathon will include the following categories to cater to a wide range of participants:

  • Full Marathon (42.195 km): Starts at 6:30 AM
  • Half Marathon (21.097 km): Starts at 7:00 AM
  • 10K Race: Starts at 7:15 AM
  • 5K Fun Run: Starts at 7:20 AM

All races will begin and end at Africell’s Beach Data Center, and registration is open via Afrimoney by dialing *227#.

Speaking at the launch, Africell Sierra Leone’s Managing Director, Mr. Shadi Gerjawi, expressed excitement about the event’s return. “The Freetown Marathon is more than a race—it’s a celebration of health, community, and perseverance. We are thrilled to bring people together for this inspiring event,” he said.

Mr. Gerjawi emphasized the importance of collaboration in ensuring the marathon’s success. “Africell believes in the power of partnerships, and we are proud to work with organizations like Street Child, who have supported us for over a decade in events such as the Makeni Marathon,” he added.

This year’s marathon promises greater incentives, with prize money increased by 40%. Africell’s Marketing Communication Manager, Mr. Kamanda Koroma, encouraged new and returning participants to seize the opportunity to compete and celebrate. He assured participants that medical teams would be available throughout the event for any emergencies.

“Our priority is health and community connection,” said Koroma. “This event is for everyone, and we urge those who haven’t participated before to join us this year.”

The Sierra Leone Athletics Association (SLAA) has pledged its technical expertise to ensure the event runs smoothly. SLAA’s Head of Media, Mr. Dalton Shyllon, highlighted the potential for marathon winners to gain international exposure, representing Sierra Leone on global platforms.

“The Freetown Marathon is one of the few marathons in the country, and it’s a stepping stone for athletes aspiring to compete internationally,” Shyllon noted.

The President of the Sierra Leone Sports Writers Association, Mr. Sahr Morris Jr., emphasized the benefits for journalists covering the event. “This marathon provides valuable experience for sports journalists, potentially paving the way for them to cover prestigious global events like the London Marathon,” he said.

Africell’s CEO described the marathon as a family-friendly event, noting its lively atmosphere and the energy of participants crossing the finish line. “This is an event where everyone, from dignitaries to everyday citizens, can feel connected through a shared experience,” Gerjawi remarked.

As Africell continues to champion community development and healthy living, the 3rd edition of the Freetown Marathon is poised to be an unforgettable celebration of Sierra Leone’s spirit. Citizens nationwide are encouraged to participate and make this year’s event a success.
