Waterloo FC made a memorable entrance into the Leone Rock Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bullom Stars FC, as Musa Tombo’s decisive strike handed the newly promoted side a dream start to life in Sierra Leone’s top flight.

In a closely contested encounter, Tombo showed sharp instincts inside the penalty area, reacting quickest to a rebound before slotting home the match-winning goal. His clinical finish proved decisive in a tense battle and earned him Man of the Match honours.

The victory gives Waterloo an early confidence boost as they seek to establish themselves among the country’s elite clubs. For a side making its first appearance in the Premier League, securing all three points at the outset represents an encouraging statement of intent.

Waterloo’s promotion followed a Sierra Leone Football Association disciplinary committee ruling that awarded the club three points and two goals after their National First Division play-off semi-final against Marampa Stars was abandoned in July. Although they later lost 2-0 to Western United in the play-off final, the earlier ruling had already secured their place in the top flight.

The club’s opening match was played without captain Mohamed N. Kamara, who missed the fixture because of what the Premier League Board described as incomplete registration.

Sahr Paul Komba, SLFA Competition Officer and Acting Secretary of the Premier League Board, said Kamara’s International Transfer Certificate had not been received from the Tanzania Football Federation, where he previously played. This was despite his former club, Singida Black Stars FC, having uploaded his release documentation.

Kamara’s ITC was expected on Monday, with his participation in Waterloo’s next match dependent on the completion of his registration.

Tombo, a former Leone Stars forward who has played for Bo Rangers and Ports Authority, brings valuable experience to the newly promoted side and serves as Waterloo’s second captain. His match-winning contribution ensured the club’s Premier League story began with celebration rather than disappointment.

Waterloo will now turn their attention to their next assignment, a home fixture against Diamond Stars in Freetown on 17 October. After a promising opening performance, they will hope to maintain their momentum and demonstrate that they can compete consistently at the highest level of domestic football.
