President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned a series of infrastructure projects in southern Sierra Leone, including a key district road, a new bridge and a public monument, while launching construction of another highway the government says will support agriculture and trade.

During a ceremony in Pujehun District on Saturday, Bio officially opened the 25-kilometre Bandajuma–Pujehun Road, the Julius Maada Bio Bridge and the Gobaru Monument, according to a statement from State House.

He also launched construction of the Pujehun–Gbondapi Road, which officials said would improve links to farming communities and advance the government’s Feed Salone food security programme.

Bio said the new transport network would reduce long-standing isolation in Pujehun District, a largely rural area in the country’s south, and improve access to schools, health facilities and markets.

“Pujehun District has suffered historical injustice for many years, and we are correcting that now,” he said, according to the statement.

The president said travel time between Bo, one of the country’s main regional cities, and Pujehun had fallen to around one hour from several hours previously.

Officials also announced plans for expanded electricity access in the district through a hybrid system combining solar generation with conventional fuel-powered supply.

Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh said the administration had completed 41 kilometres of feeder roads in the district and was overseeing cultivation of 10,000 hectares of crops under the national agriculture programme.

The Sierra Leone Roads Authority said 140 kilometres of roads and eight bridges had been delivered in Pujehun District over the past six years.

The event comes as Bio’s administration seeks to highlight infrastructure and agricultural delivery ahead of the next presidential election in 2028.
