The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has begun disbursing increased funding to regional football bodies, a move aimed at strengthening grassroots football and easing financial pressures on local associations.
According to a press release from the SLFA issued Monday, February 2, the first tranche of the annual subvention was released to the country’s five Regional Football Associations, with each receiving US$25,000 (approximately NLe 567,500). The payment represents half of the approved annual allocation for each region.
The release follows a decision by the SLFA Executive Committee, led by President Babadi Kamara, to raise annual regional funding from US$15,000 to US$50,000. Officials say the increase is intended to support local football development, including youth competitions, league organisation, and facility maintenance.
For regional football administrators, the additional funding could help alleviate long-standing resource constraints. Many grassroots teams operate with minimal budgets and rely heavily on volunteers, making consistent financial support essential for sustaining local football activities.
“The empowerment of regional associations is key to developing football across Sierra Leone,” the SLFA said in the release. “Strong regional structures are critical to identifying and nurturing young talent outside the capital.”
The SLFA also noted that the remaining 50 percent of the annual subvention will be released later in the year in accordance with financial and administrative guidelines.
