A delegation from the Guild of Newspaper Editors–Sierra Leone on Tuesday, 9 December, paid a courtesy visit to Chief Justice Komba Kamanda at his Chambers on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown.
Speaking during the engagement, the Guild’s Chairman, Thomas Dixon, commended the Chief Justice for the ongoing judicial reforms, including the establishment of a court in Mile 91 and the deployment of resident judges across several districts. He noted that the decentralisation of the Appeals Court to the provinces marks a significant step toward improving access to justice for citizens outside Freetown.
Chairman Dixon also highlighted concerns surrounding the recently introduced Practice Direction, which has sparked debate within the legal community. He outlined the Guild’s short- and long-term plans and requested the judiciary’s support, particularly in training editors on judicial processes and effective court reporting.
Chief Justice Kamanda welcomed the delegation and underscored the critical role of the media in strengthening good governance and democracy. He stressed that journalists must be able to work freely and without fear, and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining an open-door policy. Constructive criticism, he said, is essential for improving the work of the judiciary.
The Chief Justice thanked the Guild for recognising the reforms currently underway, including the new court in Mile 91, the establishment of sexual offences courts in Bo and Kono, the creation of a judicial library after more than two decades, and expanded training opportunities for judges and support staff.
Addressing concerns about the Practice Direction, Justice Kamanda explained that its use is not new, citing similar directives issued by former Chief Justices during national emergencies such as the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the current directive has already yielded positive results and will strengthen judicial practice for future generations.
Secretary General of the Guild, Ishmail Saidu Kanu, Esq., thanked the Chief Justice for hosting the Executive and for his assurance of continued openness and engagement with the media.
