Strengthening education through partnership: WAADO concludes EU-supported project in Sierra Leone’s Western Area Rural District

The Women’s Advocacy and Agricultural Development Organization (WAADO) on 28th July 2025 hosted a Project Closeout Ceremony at the MBSSE Conference Hall in Waterloo. The event brought together education stakeholders, school governance structures, and representatives from the Western Area Rural District Council, providing a platform for feedback, experience sharing, and collaborative reflection.

The 30-month project, funded by the European Union through AVSI Foundation and IGR, significantly strengthened WAADO’s operations by enhancing staff capacity in technical expertise, leadership, and project management.

A total of fourteen schools directly benefited through strengthened school governance structures, contributing to improved education outcomes in the district.

Speaking on behalf of the District Education Officer, David Alicious Koroma expressed appreciation to IGR for their continuous support to education in the Western Area Rural District. He acknowledged IGR’s role in facilitating the selection of three CSOs for the project and commended WAADO for successfully completing the project within its timeline. He encouraged beneficiaries to take ownership of the project’s outcomes to ensure sustainability.

Haji Bah, District Manager of IGR and project facilitator, highlighted that this was not their first project of this nature. He explained that the initiative was inspired by findings from research supported by the European Union, which identified key educational challenges in the district. He applauded WAADO for their outstanding implementation and dedication.

Councilor Alimatu Kamara, Chairperson of the Education Committee at the Western Area Rural District Council, expressed the Council’s gratitude for the project, emphasizing its positive impact on education. She commended WAADO for their collaborative approach and commitment to engaging stakeholders throughout the process.

In her remarks, Doris Fatima Webber, Executive Director of WAADO, emphasized that the project facilitated regular, structured dialogue between CSOs and key education stakeholders. This engagement enabled joint planning, responsiveness, and mutual understanding. She also highlighted that the project amplified the voices of marginalized groups and women’s organizations in education governance and policy implementation.

Mrs. Webber attributed the project’s success to strong collaboration with key partners, including the District Education Office, IGR, the Council, and local communities. She thanked all stakeholders and assured them of WAADO’s commitment to sustaining the project’s impact.
