The Government of Sierra Leone welcomes the formal approval by the United States Government of the country’s $480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)
Compact. This approval follows a comprehensive review of U.S. foreign assistance programs and confirms Sierra Leone’s continued status as a reliable partner in advancing mutual economic and trade interests.
The MCC Compact, signed in September 2024, is designed to modernize Sierra Leone’s energy infrastructure-expanding the national power grid, improving electricity distribution, and strengthening institutions that manage the sector. The Government of Sierra Leone is contributing an additional $14.2 million to the program.
Sierra Leone is one of only 12 countries globally, and 5 in Africa, selected to proceed from a group of 25. This decision reflects confidence in the country’s ability to deliver results and aligns with the United States’ interest in building strong, stable, and growth-oriented partnerships.
Access to affordable and reliable electricity remains a key constraint to private investment in Sierra Leone. The Compact is expected to help remove this barrier, opening new opportunities for U.S. and international businesses, supporting job creation, and strengthening the foundation for long-term trade and commercial cooperation.
This approval comes at a time of growing U.S.-Sierra Leone engagement, with the Compact serving as a platform for expanding bilateral economic ties. It also signals global recognition of Sierra Leone’s economic reforms and commitment to creating a more competitive and investor-friendly environment.
President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership has been central to this outcome. His administration’s focus on sound economic management, infrastructure, and strategic global partnerships
continues to position Sierra Leone as a serious and credible partner on the global stage.
The Government of Sierra Leone looks forward to entering the implementation phase of the Compact and to deepening commercial and investment relations with the United States.
