Sierra Leone: Teacher accused of impregnating a pupil

By Richmond B Tholley

A teacher at the Makama Baptist Secondary School in the Northern city of Makeni has been accused of impregnating a 16-year-old school pupil.

The teacher, report says impregnated the 16-year-old victim and later aborted the pregnancy two weeks after ago.

Samuel Turay, the teacher, a police investigator attached to the Family Support Unit of the Mena Police station in Makeni, reveals is on the run after a report was made against him by the victim’s family.

“Yes, we are currently investigating the matter but Samuel Turay is on the run. The police have however declared him wanted.”

The officer confirms they had obtained statements from the victim and the family.

According to the victim, she had been in a romantic relationship with Turay a year ago and she states it was the teacher who deflowered her in an unfinished house owned by Turay’s family.

The victim claims she was in SSS 1 at age 15 when Turay alias Shasha vaginated her in the second term.

“We had sex multiple times in one of the unfinished buildings in their compound.”

She also claims she had been in a sexual relationship with the teacher until recently when she learned that she missed her monthly menstrual period.

The 16-year-old victim says she informed the teacher who is a neighbor that she missed her menstrual period.

Having confirmed that she was pregnant, she adds Turay then advised that they abort the pregnancy.

One night, she alleges Turay brought in a rubber medicine made from local herbs and asked her to drink.

“He asked me to drink the medicine and the following day I saw blood oozing from my private part. I experienced stomach aches throughout that period and it was painful.”

The mother of the victim, Warrah Bangura, says she recalled a week ago the suspected teacher went to her house and informed her that his wife was accusing him of having an affair with her daughter, the victim.

The mother said the teacher asked her to take action against his wife for smearing the name of the victim.

The mother reveals she learned about her daughter’s pregnancy and its abortion when she visited Turay’s residence to ascertain the information. And her daughter, the victim, she claims, later confirmed the story to be true.

“From that point, I alerted one of her aunties who advised that we report the matter to the police. We later reported the matter to the Mena police station, and statements have been obtained from us.”

Through an Africell number, this medium was able to reach Turay and he has denied the allegation. When asked why he’s hiding from the Police, he asserts, it is because in Sierra Leone the Police will believe whatever the victim alleges.

“I may not be allowed to explain they will just lock me up once the girl has spoken.”
